What a great day at PS 107 in Brooklyn! I shared the inspiration for The Pearl Hunter and talked about the origins of the fantastical creatures that Kai encounters in the book, including the ghost whale and the supernatural foxes. The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders discovered they already knew a lot about yokai - Japanese monsters from myth and folklore - from pop culture sources like Pokemon, Studio Ghibli movies, and video games.
